Being a therapist is consistently rewarding and emotionally fulfilling. I pursued becoming a clinician because I have always found the resilience and perseverance of people facing difficulties in life to be extremely inspirational. I feel privileged that my clients' share their deepest feelings with me and it is through connecting to their emotional experiences-that I also stay rooted in my own sense of awareness and self. Counselors can only effectively treat clients-if they are also capable of navigating through life’s challenges with a healthy perspective. It's my opinion that until a therapist has worked on their own personal growth...that only then can they be truly effective in guiding clients toward positive choices and full potential. For this reason, I believe clients' benefit most from working with therapists who also have participate in the therapeutic process themselves and engage in regular peer supervision.
Although I subscribe to an eclectic counseling philosophy, I am most influenced by the Person Centered theoretical orientation, developed by Carl Rogers. Rogers described the concepts of congruence and incongruence as important factors to finding one’s authentic self. He recognized the need for unconditional positive regard (a form of unconditional acceptance). Roger’s explained that a fully congruent person is one who is able to lead a life that is genuine. Incongruent individuals, in their pursuit of a healthy, balanced life, often pursue actions or behaviors that are not true to their real self. As a result, they may lose the awareness of their true potential for growth or effective problem solving.
Learning how to embrace imperfections while remaining open to self improvement presents great opportunities for meaningful change and self love. I believe that everyone is a continuous, ever changing work in progress and I feel that the connection and rapport we build together is instrumental to therapeutic success. I hope to be an agent of change for my clients by assisting them in the process of discovery and acceptance of the self.
